New criminal offence of criminal neglect proposed

The Department of Health has issued a consultation to implement one of the recommendations following the Francis report on Mid Staffs hospital. This proposes a new criminal offence of ill-treatment or wilful neglect of users of health and social care services. This is likely to apply to all pharmacy professionals engaged in NHS activities and probably in private healthcare too. Consultation closes on 31st March 2014.

PLEA member wins award

Alan Greenberg, a long standing PLEA member from Israel has been presented with the outstanding pharmacist award from the Israel Pharmaceutical Society. As chairman of their ethics committee, Alan has always taken an interest in the ethical and judicial aspects of pharmacy practice. If you are member of the RPS or subscribe to the Pharmaceutical Journal, there is a more information in the 1st March edition on page 230.

MHRA simplifies information on medicines adverts

The MHRA has issued a consultation (MLX 384) on proposals to simplify the information required to be included in some advertisements to prescribers and other suppliers of medicines. Consultation closes on 22nd April 2014

GPhC guidance on unlicensed medicines

The GPhC has issued guidance on preparing unlicensed medicines. This is not  a formal consultation but comments are invited by 14th March 2014.

Care Bill Information sheets available

The Department of Health has published 18 factsheets and a glossary to accompany the Care Bill. This was introduced in May 2013 and is now progressing through Parliament.

PPRS 2014 agreed

A five year voluntary agreement - the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme - has been agreed from 2014 between the government and the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry. The scheme is intended to provide assurance on almost all of the branded medicines price bill for the NHS.
