The "Red Tape Challenge"

As part of a Government initiative called the "Red Tape Challenge", which gives members of the public the opportunity to comment on the regulations governing a range of different industrial areas with a view to making such regulations less burdensome, between 9 March 2012 and 12 April 2012, comments have been invited in respect of the regulation of medicines. There are a range of areas for which comments can be submitted, including any feedback in relation to regulations governing the safe management and use of Controlled Drugs from a registered pharmacy and the Responsible Pharmacist provisions. Law Commission consults on regulator review

The Law Commission has published a consultation on its proposals for a single statute covering the regulation of all health and social care professionals, including the CHRE, the GPhC and the PSNI. The consultation closes on 31st May 2012

GPhC want views on revalidation

The GPhC has published its proposed principles for introducing revalidation. This appears not to be a formal consultation as there is no closing date, but it has asked for views on refining its seven proposed principles

Consultation on GPhC fees

The GPhC has published a consultation on its proposals for fees from October 2012. They propose a 10% reduction in registrants' fees; other fees, including those for premises, will stay at the current level. Consultation closes 8th May 2012.

Proposals to change Wales Pharmacy Contract

The Welsh Government has issued a consultation on proposals to modernise the 1992 Pharmaceutical Services Regulations (these still apply to Wales; the 2005 regulations only apply to England). Consultation closes on 27th April 2012.

Consultation on HealthWatch membership

The DH has issued a consultation on draft regulations for the membership of HealthWatch England which will be an independent statutory committee of CQC (Care Quality Commission). HealthWatch, and local HealthWatch groups advising Local Authorities, are the latest incarnation of mechanisms for the involvement of patients and the public in the operation and quality of the NHS in England. Consultation closes 2nd March 2012

GPhC consults on standards for registered pharmacies

The GPhC has issued a consultation on draft standards for registered pharmacies. This takes a new outcome-focussed approach within existing legislation. Implementation is planned to commence in Autumn 2012 but there is likely to be a significant transitional phase for existing pharmacies. Consultation closes on 7th May 2012.

Consultation on second PNA regulations

The DH has issued a consultation on a further set of regulations to implement the Health Act 2009 provisions regarding Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments (PNAs). These include removal of three (not "distance selling") of the current exemptions to control of entry, notably the "100 hour exemption". The consultation also covers powers to take remedial action over breach of terms of service and poor performance. Consultation closes 25th January 2012.
